Rockstar North Veterans Launch Criminal Games: Edinburgh’s New AAA Studio Betting on Contract Work

In Scotland, a new AAA game studio is incorporated under the name “Criminal Games.” The studio is formed by former Rockstar veterans Lawrance John Kerr and Mark David Beagan.

Kerr was the Co-Founder and former Principal Mission Designer at Rockstar North while Mark David Beagan was the Co-Founder and former Senior Mission Designer at Rockstar North. The devs helped create Grand Theft Auto 4and Red Dead Redemption, among others.

Criminal Games is founded by experienced former developers from world-leading AAA game studio Rockstar North. Our team includes talent who previously worked at Epic Games, TT Games, Build A Rocket Boy and others. Individually we have helped shape some of the most iconic franchises in gaming Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Call of Duty, Fortnite, LEGO and more. We specialize in crafting high quality, single‑player open worlds built with purpose that play well. No excess. No clutter. Just pure design, engineering, ownership and intent.

LinkedIn shows the company has 6 employees at the time of this writing, although there could be more who aren’t on the platform. However, one of the goals of Criminal Games, reportedly, is AAA game development with smaller teams which could be an indication of using AI in some aspect of game design. In fact, the head of engineering of the company, Nia Kiigan, has some AI credentials on her LinkedIn bio.

What exactly they are working on remains to be seen but right now it seems they are mainly focused on doing contract work.
