Some new information regarding StarCraft: Remastered has come to light that reveals just how successful Blizzard’s revival of the classic RTS really was, offering the first concrete look at its commercial performance almost a decade after launch.
According to the LinkedIn of Alexis Gresoviac, former Managing Director of Blizzard, StarCraft Remastered sold 450,000 copies in 2017. The number is particularly notable because it far exceeds what internal estimates and expectations were at the time.
The company had reportedly set a modest target of just 150,000 units, meaning the remaster ultimately tripled projections.

Turned underperforming products and teams into high-performing revenue engines, including launching StarCraft: Remastered to 450,000 units (3× target), securing major broadcast deals, and executing live activations drawing 30,000+ attendees—all while cutting delays and operational waste.
Released on August 14, 2017, at a price of $15.99, StarCraft: Remastered modernized the original 1998 classic while preserving its core gameplay systems. At the time, expectations from the remastered version were relatively low. Legacy titles, even beloved ones, often struggle to find a large enough audience to justify significant investment.
However, it appears StarCraft Remastered sales outperformed expectations thanks to Blizzard’s Seoul studio. While 450,000 units may not rival blockbuster releases, it represents a strong performance for a remaster of a nearly two-decade-old title, especially one released at a budget price point.
